They joined the gentlemen outside, where they were gathered around a carriage.

“We will need to take separate rooms, so no one is suspicious,” Walter was saying to James when they saw the ladies. James smiled broadly at the sight of Rebecca, and she thought that maybe -- just maybe -- he cared for her as much as she was starting to care for him. She would discuss it with him upon his return.

“Be safe,” she told him.

He brought her in for a chaste kiss on the lips. “My purpose is to keep you safe,” he whispered. “Don’t worry about me. Lord Danbury will rue the day he ever sent me that blasted note.”

Rebecca smiled. “Or that he agreed with my mother to wed me.”

“Ah, yes, you have thoroughly foiled his plans,” James said with a laugh.

Peter cleared his throat. “You both should leave while there’s still daylight…”

“Easy for you to say,” Walter said, looping an arm around Patience’s waist, pulling her close against him. “You get to stay here with your wife.”

“Someone has to keep our ladies out of trouble.” He cast a look toward Juliana and she pretended to be shocked by his accusation.

James gave the back of Rebecca’s hand a final kiss. “I will return, and you will be safe,” he promised.

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak, as she watched her husband step into the carriage after Walter. It moved forward, the horses trotting away, and Rebecca stood frozen to the spot as Patience waved.

Just like that, her husband was gone, off to untold dangers on her behalf.
